AI Times, a Korean AI publication, has published Managing Partner Yongduck Kim's column on AI patents.
In this column, with the theme of “Generative AI, expanding to the boundaries of photography… the era of ‘infinite canvas’ demonstrated by Qualcomm’s patented technology,” we look at the direction of development of technology where generative AI goes beyond image editing and naturally creates spaces outside the boundaries of photos. Recently, generative AI has gone beyond simply creating new images and is evolving into 'outpainting' technology that expands into spaces that did not exist based on photos taken by users. This is attracting attention as a new paradigm that blurs the boundaries between photography and image creation.
In this column, we analyze next-generation image generation technology that combines generative AI with smartphone cameras, focusing on Qualcomm's US patent US 12,671,893 (Generating Image Content). The patent proposes a structure in which AI creates areas outside the photo in real time using only familiar gestures such as pinch, drag, and rotation. In addition, it demonstrates technical features that overcome the physical limitations of existing cameras by using images from wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto cameras together with multiple photos taken at different times to understand space and naturally create insufficient areas.
This column specifically focuses on the fact that generative AI is evolving beyond a simple image creation tool into a platform for reconstructing reality. The combination of an intuitive user interface and generative AI presents the possibility of expanding not only to smartphones but also to various fields such as AR/VR, autonomous driving, and robots, and highlights the changes that will be brought about in future camera technology and content production methods. This is a representative patent example that shows the transition from an era of photographic recording to an era where AI expands and reconstructs reality.
