AI Times column: the patent behind “AI that teaches learning”

Yongdeok Kim examines a teacher–student training patent acquired by Anthropic and its approach to weighting learning examples.

A new IPLEX contribution to AI Times

An AI patent column by IPLEX managing patent attorney Yongdeok Kim has been published in AI Times. It examines US Patent No. 11,443,235, acquired by Anthropic, through a practical question: can a system improve learning by deciding which examples deserve greater weight?

The teacher learns how to train the student

In the described framework, a student model makes predictions while a teacher determines weights for training examples. Candidate student performance is assessed against test data, and a reward signal updates the teacher’s weighting policy. The object is to improve the learning process itself, rather than simply supply more examples.

Giving extra weight to every misclassified example is not necessarily beneficial: noisy data or incorrect labels can also be hard to learn. The patent concerns a mechanism for learning which examples contribute to better performance. Its potential relevance includes reducing the influence of errors or duplication and directing training toward useful information.

Reading a patent without assuming product implementation

The column explains the relationship between data selection, training quality and AI accuracy from a patent practitioner’s perspective. It does not establish that Claude uses this patented mechanism. Ownership of a patent, the technical scope of its claims and implementation in a commercial product are separate questions.

IPLEX continues to analyse AI research and patent disclosures with attention to the technical problem, the proposed means and the evidence for their effects. The published column is available through the AI Times link below.
