HOME / NEWS & INSIGHTS NEWS & INSIGHTS Baidu’s RAG approach to conflicts between model answers and retrieved knowledge US20260087055A1 distinguishes factual and semantic conflicts and describes different routes to a final answer. AI & Software 2026.10.06 published IPLEX 10 min read Conceptual comparison of model answers and retrieved knowledge When two plausible sources disagree A model may say that expenses must be claimed by month-end, while a retrieved policy says within seven days of travel. This is a hypothetical example, not a statement of Baidu’s rules. More retrieval alone does not determine which account to use. Parametric knowledge learned during training and externally retrieved material can diverge, and RAG supplies material at inference time rather than necessarily retraining the model. The document examined here is the published US patent application US20260087055A1, published on 26 March 2026, with Baidu Online Network Technology (Beijing) as applicant. The A1 publication is not proof of grant. The analysis concerns the disclosed processing flow; it does not establish the application’s current legal status or its implementation in a commercial product. The initial result contains more than an answer The disclosed first result includes a response, response logic and contextual knowledge. These outputs expose material that can be compared with retrieved information. Response logic is a generated explanation, not a verified record of the model’s hidden computation. In parallel, the question is used to search a database or another relevant information source. Figure 1 separates initial generation, retrieval, conflict classification and production of a target response. The comparison can involve document collections, databases or web information, with the same or different sources in different implementations. The technical distinction lies in the information exchanged and the subsequent branch, not simply in adding a search box to a language model. Publication Figure 1: initial result, retrieval, conflict classification and final response Classifying what is inconsistent A factual conflict concerns information such as a date, amount or deadline. A semantic conflict concerns meaning or relationships: for example, a manager approving an employee’s request versus the employee approving the manager’s request. Similar words do not make those statements equivalent. Other categories can be defined, but the application expressly develops factual and semantic errors. Figure 2 supplies the classification stage with the initial result, retrieved result, definitions and reference examples of conflict types. The stages can use the same model or different models. Supplying explicit criteria and examples helps make the requested classification interpretable; it does not make a model’s classification automatically correct. Publication Figure 2: classification using error definitions and reference examples Different processing after classification For a semantic conflict, the initial and retrieved results, conflict type, and the relevant definition and examples can be given to a response-processing model. This supports reconsideration of the relationship being expressed. It is different from blindly replacing one answer with a retrieved sentence, and generated explanatory text remains subject to verification. For a factual conflict, the disclosed loop asks the original model again, retrieves again and reclassifies the new pair, continuing until the type is no longer a factual error. Both branches are renewed: the source could also be stale or wrong. The expense example illustrates that flow only. Agreement or a changed classification is not, by itself, proof that the final answer is true. Hypothetical expense-claim example, not a product screen or actual company policy Where Qianfan fits—and what its documentation does not prove Baidu Qianfan provides a platform for language-model and agent workflows. Its knowledge-base node supports full-text, semantic and hybrid retrieval and reranking, then passes retrieved fragments downstream. In the documented RAG workflow, knowledge content and the original question are supplied to the model as separate inputs. This product documentation helps explain a practical setting for retrieval and response generation. It does not establish that Qianfan implements every limitation in this application, that all deployments use the conflict loop, or that the application has been granted. The public workflow and the patent disclosure should be assessed separately. Engineering and patent-analysis implications An implementation review can trace the question, first result, retrieved evidence, classification and branch to the final response. Document versions, latency and repeated retrieval matter. Iteration limits, escalation to human review and evidence-quality controls are sensible deployment considerations, not features we assume the application necessarily claims. Logging this process does not mean updating model weights. For IP analysis, identify the concrete inputs, definitions, decision criteria and processing changes, and compare them with earlier approaches and the actual claims. IPLEX can review AI and software workflows using materials that may safely be shared, such as system diagrams, representative disagreements and evaluation conditions. This commentary does not establish novelty, validity, freedom to operate or a measured performance gain.
